Whether it’s a business trip, family vacation, or Christmas at a relative’s, traveling is an integral part of modern life. While it is perfectly okay to take a few rest days from exercising, it is actually quite often a better option to maintain a fitness routine or at least an active lifestyle while traveling for the following reasons:

(1)Sometimes, the overall time of traveling can be quite long, e.g. 1-2 weeks. In this case, it would be a good idea to invest some time to maintain your fitness level.

(2)If you are following a fitness program strictly, and have already planned out your rest-day activities, such as spending a Sunday out with family, it would be a waste to use the rest day during a business trip just because you can’tworkout while traveling.

(3)When we are traveling to exotic places, or spending holidays with family, or simply on a business trip, it is harder to keep a strict diet than when we are at home. Exercising while traveling is a good way to counterbalance this problem.

Below is a list of options available for your fitness routine while traveling. Of course, you can also mix and match different options!

Utilize the Hotel Facility

This is the easiest option. Many hotels have fitness facilities available for their guests. While it might seem redundant, it is always a good idea to call the hotel in advance and make sure that their fitness facility is operational before you book. Sometimes, the fitness facility might be closed due to a renovation or other unforeseen circumstances while the website is not updated.

It is also a good idea to inquire about the opening hours of the gym and breakfast time at the restaurant. If you like to exercise early in the morning, it is important that both the gym and the restaurant open early enough for you. This is especially important if you are on a business trip, and have appointments early in the morning. If the hotel restaurant doesn’t open early enough for you, you can consider exercising before breakfast or simply buy your own breakfast the night before. In this case, it will be much better if the hotel room has a fridge and a microwave.

Lastly, you can check out the photos of the gym from the website, and also ask about the type of fitness equipment the hotel has while you are on the phone with the hotel staff. When you arrive at the hotel, it’s also a good idea to check out the gym before the actual workout. This way, you can plan out your workout schedule without any surprises.

Utilize the Outdoor Environment

If your hotel doesn’t have a fitness facility, an alternative would be to check out its vicinity for parks, schools, and playgrounds. The staff at your hotel will be able to help you with this before your arrival. Of course, the downside of exercising outdoors is that it will be weather dependent. If you are traveling for an extended period of time, it might be worth it to check out community centers or gyms near the hotel. They might have a pay-per-visit option or a short-term membership that could suit your needs.

Exercise in Your Hotel Room

When you don’thave the above two options, you can definitely exercise in your hotel room. If you know before your arrival that you will choose this option, we recommend that you book a single bed room as opposed to double bed room, e.g. 1 king size mattress, as opposed to 2 queen size mattress.

This is because most hotel rooms in the same price range have the same square footage. You will get more empty floor space for exercising if there is only 1 mattress in the room.

In addition, to avoid disturbing other hotel guests. It is always a good idea to request a room on the ground floor. If this is not possible, you can go to the "Apartment Modification" page under "Modificationbased on Equipment Availability" for useful tips on exercising without disturbing your neighbors.

Bring Your Own Equipment

In general, we find that it is often not worth the trouble to bring your own exercise equipment while traveling since you have the above mentioned 3 options to choose from.

There are also a few drawbacks to bringing your own equipment:

(1)Exercise equipment adds weight and bulk to your luggage. The addition of fitness equipment could mean that you will have to check in your luggage which increases cost and wait time at the airport.

(2)Suspension systems are a popular take-along fitness equipment for traveling. However, short of seeing the hotel room in person, it is very difficult to know whether your hotel room will satisfy the anchoring and space requirement for a suspension training system.

(3)Another popular fitness equipment for traveling are resistance bands. While they certainly do not have as many limitations as a suspension training system, they are also less flexible. In addition, many exercises with resistance bands involve stepping on the bands to create the desired resistance. Therefore, you need to either clean the resistance bands or prepare a storage method before putting the bands back into the luggage, in which clean clothes are stored.

Nonetheless, there could be some situations in which traveling with your own fitness equipment are helpful:

When you travel for an extended period of time and are uncertain about the available hotel facilities and its environment, it will be worth it to bring your own equipment as a backup plan.

If you have sensitive skin, it will be a good idea to bring your own exercise/yoga mat with you. This way, you can use it as a protective layer between your skin and the hotel room floor.

Besides knowing your exercise options, another matter to consider is your exercise wear. Exercise wear for traveling needs special attention because after a sweaty exercise session, your clothing may end up being drenched in sweat, leaving you with a problem of dealing with heavy soaked sweaty clothing. To take care of this issue delicately, we have the following tips for you:

Bring a few plastic bags with you to store sweaty exercise wear. It's also a good idea to store your exercise laundry separate from your regular laundry.

Choose to wear quick-dry material. Exercise wear made from quick-dry material can dry within a day without machine spinning. This means that you can bring just one outfit for your entire trip, as long as you hand wash and hang it after each time your exercise.

Choosing the option to exercise in your own hotel room helps with reducing laundry as well, since you can practically work out naked, or almost naked!
